Nanoparticle shapes: Beyond the Wulff construction

In a paper that was just published in Nano Letters, we introduce a method that allows us to obtain optimal nanoparticle shapes as a practically continuous function of size for particles in the range from 1 to about 7 nanometers. This in turn enables us to accurately determine the distribution of particle shape vs size, which reveals a very feature rich distribution that arises already for thermodynamic (and not merely kinetic) reasons.
